You’ve seen it everywhere: the viral videos on Facebook, the endless campaigns and the rise of sustainable everything—– the amount of devastation we’ve done to our environment is impeccable, if not terrifying.
Our generation often takes for granted that the air we breathe is a privilege of having trees photosynthesise the toxic carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. As of We also ignore the signs of climate change due to pollution. We take for granted that the seemingly minuscule things such as breathing, seeing greenery and being able to swim in the beautiful ocean are a mere privilege.
Human beings have become so self-absorbed that they neglect these privileges and still expect our environment to survive. I am happy to note that Davao is a city that makes an effort in minimizing waste. One store that stood out recently is Croft Bulk Foods.
It’s one of the first zero-waste shops in Davao and it opened only last September. It’s located in Unit 6A, Paseo Uno Bldg., Ruby Street Corner Opal Street Marfori Heights. Its neighbors are SPARK Cafe and Sweet Leaf Bubble Tea Cafe.
Here’s a photo of the shop:

The shop motif is minimalist, monochromatic and simple. Once you enter, an array of plain, transparent containers greet you. I like that they use very simple decor because it highlights their products even more.
Their products range from nuts, dried fruit, cacao, flour, and grains. Aside from the food, they also sell sustainable products such as bamboo and metal straws. They also have bamboo toothbrushes and reusable utensils.
They also sell soaps, shampoo bars and even detergent and dishwashing soaps. All of these items have no plastic packaging and can be carried around in the customer’s own ecobags/produce bags or opt to use the store’s brown paper bags.
I opted to get some my favorites: almonds, cashews and a couple of grams of spiced cacao nibs.
Overall, I loved Croft Bulk Food’s products. I love the idea that Davao finally has sustainable options and I love their advocacy. Borne from the minds behind The Vegan Dinosaur, CROFT Bulk Foods aims to “offer options for the general public but more importantly for us to have access to ingredients which we were previously restricted to due to plastic packaging”. All their supply are plant-based and zero waste; making sure that no animals were exploited or harmed.
Croft Bulk Foods is the first store of its kind to open in Davao City and I hope that one day, our city supports and lessens their plastic consumption. I just wish everyone would appreciate our environment today and do everything in their power to lessen their impact in the destruction of it.
