Dabawenya Artist Dadai Joaquin launches “Undertones” exhibit at dusitD2 Davao

Continuously advocating for local artistry, Dusit Hotels and Resorts in Davao bring in the artworks of Dadai Joaquin for a month-long exhibit at the Dusit Gourmet Lounge of dusitD2.

Before ushering in a holiday transformation in the hotel, dusitD2 Davao gives a pre-holiday visual treat through the exhibit of Dadai Joaquin launched on October 8th. Dubbed as “Undertones,” the collection is a chemistry of light and colors that encourages its viewers to take time and wonder about the painting process. The exhibit is open for all guests and runs for the entire month of October, located at the Dusit Gourmet Lounge.

During the exhibit launch, Dadai elaborated the inspiration for the array of artworks displayed for Dusit. “The mundane, seen under a different light and put under the brush of a painter who sees beyond the readily evident, becomes extraordinary. A common everyday thing becomes a spectacle from the interplay of colors playfully applied,” she shares.

In his welcome message, Dusit Davao General Manager Christoph Kuch expresses his thanks, “We are grateful to be working with artists like Dadai Joaquin, who not only embodies the talent Dabawenyo painters have but also shows the prowess of depth in her art. This is the last installation before we turn in into the holiday festivities, and this one is a visual spectacle for the hotel.”

This was followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting and opening of Joaquin’s exhibit together with Ms. Honeylet Avanceña, Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Mabel Sunga-Acosta, DOT XI Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, Dra. Lourdes Ledesma, and Dusit Davao GM Christoph Kuch.

This visual artist is known for her masterful use of color, light, shadow, and composition to create her signature impressionistic artwork. A self-confessed workaholic who paints day in and day out, she nevertheless portrays the beauty around her through her experiences as a person and as a woman. “I prefer to portray feelings, emotions, and beauty,” she says.

Dadai is also fascinated by light: the physics behind it, the myriad colors that can radiate from a single ray of white light, and the way it reflects and bounces to give color, depth, and even meaning to objects. “While light is by itself invisible, it is light that makes us see things,” she says. “I seek to paint this light, and it is possible to get lost in the beauty of it. I don’t wait for inspiration to strike before I paint. Light is what inspires me: how it strikes an object, and how an object comes to life with it.”
