Añejo Gold Medium Rum Relaunch at Bondi & Bourke Davao

I’ve always been a fan of rum; a cold cuba libre my run-to drink whenever I hang out with friends. Ginebra San Miguel Inc.’s Tripscape two Saturdays ago, Oct 21, 2017, was an event that reintroduced their Añejo Rum.

Launched in the 90s, Añejo Rum was warmly welcomed by Filipinos. For a long time, it was an inuman staple… and was even the basketball team, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s name (Añejo Rum 65ers from 1988-1990).

I was lucky enough to witness Ginebra San Miguel Inc.’s reintroduction of the new Añejo: the Añejo Gold Medium Rum. They invited Davao Digital Influencers to Tripscape: “a brand launch, tasting event and a celebration of passions.” The company chose the best venue, too: Bondi & Bourke Davao.

Bondi & Bourke served their vegetable hummus, seafood chowder, some roasted chicken and potatoes. Their dessert was to-die-for! Their creme brulee is definitely something I want to go back for. The consistency and taste of this dish was something I was new to. Most dishes of its kind were often too sweet and sometimes even burnt but this one was close to perfection. 10/10.

Given the fact that most Rums are 80 proof, Añejo’s 67.5 proof boasts of being in between too light and too ma-tama. Being the curious boozie that I am, I wanted to try Añejo in the various ways it was offered: neat, on the rocks, and in cocktails. Luckily, Mixologist Enzo Lim was more than willing to show off his skills.

My verdict?

  1. Neat: Añejo may only have a 67.5 proof but taking it neat was still too much for me. Taking it neat is a little too Tito for me, tbh.
  2. On the rocks: This was definitely better as the ice neutralizes Añejo’s strength and tartness.
  3. The Butterscotch Highball: This was way too sweet for my taste.
  4. The “Tess” was amazing and what pretty much convinced me that Añejo was my new go-to rum.

Añejo Medium Rum is just the right amount of tama everyone needs to get their creative juices flowing. It’s incredibly versatile; anyone can and will enjoy this new product from Ginebra San Miguel. Cheers!
